"When you're young it's important to have someone bad to look up to. I hope that I can be that for someone here tonight."—John Waters
The legendary filmmaker John Waters, known affectionately as the "Baron of Bad Taste," the "Sultan of Sleaze" and the "Pope of Trash," is the world's preeminent auteur of dark, gross-out comedy, changing the cinematic landscape forever with such unexpectedly intelligent camp classics as Pink Flamingos, Hairspray and Serial Mom.
In "A John Waters Christmas," Waters details his groundbreaking career by combining comedy and monologue to take a look at his influence in films and cult-culture.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland in 1946, John Waters was drawn to movies at an early age. He subscribed to "Variety" at the age of twelve, absorbing the magazine's factual information and its lexicon of insider lingo. This early education would prove useful as the future director began his career giving puppet shows for children's birthday parties. As a teenager, Waters made 8mm underground movies influenced by the likes of Jean-Luc Godard, Walt Disney, Andy Warhol, Russ Meyer, Ingmar Bergman and Herschell Gordon Lewis.
His latest film, A Dirty Shame, was released in the summer of 2004 and stars Chris Issak, Tracy Ullman and Johnny Knoxville. Waters is a member of The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and is on the Wexner Center International Arts Advisory Council. In the fall of 2002, he was appointed to the board of The Andy Warhol Foundation.
Waters' live performance skills were honed early in his career when he and his leading lady Divine would appear at his film screenings and concoct outrageous skits to make the evening more memorable. Now, more than 30 years later, this Baltimore native has become one of the world's most recognizable directors and has even been bestowed with the highest of cultural honors - his immortalization as an animated character on an episode of The Simpsons. Waters brings his live Christmas show to Portland, detailing his groundbreaking career in a rapid-fire stand-up comedy format, and conducting an audience Q&A.
He will be joined by a Portland's one-and-only Karaoke From Hell, the World's Premiere Live Rock-n-Roll Karaoke Band that will entertain the crowd before and after Mr. Water's Comedy and Q&A performance.
This event takes place at 9:30pm on Friday, Dec. 16 at Dante's, 1 SW 3rd & Burnside in downtown Portland and is approximately one hour with an intermission and is followed by a question and answer session.
